So you either want to stream on discord or you just want to learn all the ropes of streaming better on discord.
If You Need Further Assistance Please Post On The Cim Boards Provided At The Bottom Of This Topic.
I got you and all Cimmarian! Follow along and you’ll be streaming anything like a pro in no time.
First let’s list off what you will need first before we get started.
- Gaming rig (Optimal performance)
- Permission to stream on the discord server
- Discord overlay
- Capture card (If streaming consoles)
The first step is to make sure you have the video streaming role in your server or in the server you hang out in such as Cimmarian.
After you have checked to make sure you have this permission you will be able to activate your stream in any voice channel that has it activated.
Next, let’s look into your user settings to get some basics set up for your convenience. First, we will be looking at the Overlay.
Make sure to enable in-game overlay. You can set the keybinding to anything you like just don’t pick the same as possible DRM overlays (steam, epic, gog, uplay etc)
Let’s look at your voice and video options and make sure you have the best default settings on. Remember that you can change any of these to your preferences.
Here you’ll notice I don’t have my input and output set to “default”. I don’t suggest leaving these as default as it’s best to make sure you have the device you want to use being used at all times. Some games and software can get permission to change your default input and output on you.
Voice Activity is usually preferred by most gamers but you might want to set push to talk depending if you want open mic in the game you are playing or not.
Now we look at the bells and whistles of Discord’s advanced settings. You may need to change some of these settings to suit your computers fancy but on average you won’t need to do much different from these current settings.
Make sure you turn on “Use our latest technology to capture your screen.” If you plan on streaming anything other than video games. If the game you stream doesn’t have audio turn this on.
Make sure to go into Discord’s Game Activity menu when you turn your game on. You can also click “Add It!” if your game is not detected. Click the screen so it’s not red to activate in-game overlay.
You don’t need to copy my keybindings nor use them. They just help especially if you are streaming VR or maybe the game is not being detected in the overlay to “start stream”. I suggest starting out with “Toggle Go Live Streaming”, “Toggle Overlay”, “Push to Mute”.
Please note the “Activate Overlay Chat” this is important to type in text channels while gaming! Change it if you wish to have a custom keybinding.
Congratulation on making it this far. Now we can start to play our game, stream it and chat with our audience. Look at your Discord Overlay and see the “Pin” up at the top and click this.
After you pin the chat move it to the location you want and resize it to your desired width and length. I suggest keeping it wider instead of longer to avoid major distractions in action games.
Now when you close your overlay you’ll notice the chat stays available for you to see while gaming!
While you are in-game you can use the keybinding you have set to activate the chat. This will allow you to share Emoji, Talk, Links and GIFs while you are gaming with your audience. You no longer need to open your overlay to chat.
There you have it gamers! We now have our overlay set up and ready to talk with our fellow gamers while in-game.
Want to remove the chat from your screen? Just hit the pin again.
Want to make the chat more or less transparent? Beside the Pin, you’ll see another icon to control your Overlay Transparency.
